Gina Ebanks-Petrie, BSc Biology (Hons), MSc Environmental Management (Distinction), has worked in the Department of Environment for over 30 years and was appointed Director of Environment in 1996. During her tenure as the Director of Environment, Gina has guided the development of the department from a small staff of 16; primarily responsible for the marine environment to a current staff complement of 41 with added responsibilities for the conservation and management of terrestrial resources and environmental assessment services.
Highlights of Gina’s career include working as part of the teams that established the Cayman Islands’ Marine Parks in 1986 and the National Trust for the Cayman Islands in 1987.
She is a founding member of the National Trust and served on its Council in various capacities for 23 years. More recently Gina spearheaded the development of a new comprehensive National Conservation Law which replaced the 30-year-old Marine Conservation Law and Animals Law and provides a framework for the protection and conservation of native biodiversity.
Gina currently sits as a member of the National Conservation Council, the National Energy Council and the National Hazard Management Council.
